bol. is transforming retail to make the daily lives of approximately 13.5 million customers easier. Together with 51,000 partners doing business on their retail tech platform, they offer 40 million items and handle order spikes of up to 700 orders per minute (Black Friday, 2020). Because bol. is a retail tech platform, its financial processes are more complex than those of traditional e-commerce companies. The combination of growth, a major internal transition, and fierce market dynamics makes bol. a market leader in a unique setting. Their organization changes more in a year than some other organizations do in a decade.
In this role, you will work with enthusiastic team members to tackle management issues and guide the organization towards a future-proof control framework. This is exactly why the internal control team is also evolving. You are part of the Risk & Control team (a subteam of Legal, Risk & Compliance). As the Specialist Internal Control, you actively contribute to this transition by being a true business partner. You report to the Team Lead Internal Control and work closely with a team of specialists in Risk, IT, and Fraud.
You will have a unique birds-eye view of all processes within the organization, engaging with many senior stakeholders such as first-line Process Owners, Legal & Compliance, and Internal & External Audit. You will focus on end-to-end processes from an IT perspective and develop, implement, and monitor relevant IT controls, including both general IT controls and application controls.
You are responsible for ensuring that the Internal Control framework remains future-proof. You review and adapt the controls to fit both existing business models and new business propositions. Conducting interviews with business owners to gather necessary insights, you will review the input and provide sharp risk analyses.
As the Specialist Internal Control, your main focus is managing, optimizing, and advising on IT processes within the Internal Control framework. You will support the process of enhancing the internal control framework in accordance with applicable requirements, based on the maturity and evolution of the organization. The areas you will review and advise on will relate to, but not be limited to, IT governance, IT security, and regulatory compliance. You will highlight potential consequences or risks so they can be eliminated or reduced to meet the quality standards of the Internal Control framework. With these challenging responsibilities, your role is to ensure that the internal control framework is scalable and adaptable, even with the complex and impactful new propositions ahead.
You are a risk and control expert at heart. You ensure the control framework remains up-to-date and are always investigating whether processes can be better, smarter, and more efficient. In addition, you are a strong communicator who can cope well with change and is also pragmatic.
"To be successful as an Internal Control Specialist, you excel not only in Risk & Control but also in stakeholder management. You can identify key risks, ask critical questions, and stand firm when necessary. Additionally, you build strong relationships, empathize with others, and adapt your communication style as needed.”

bol. and sustainability
bol. strives to improve every day: from packing and delivering as economically as possible to using 100 percent wind and solar energy in all its buildings. With its sustainable assortment, bol. wants to help customers make the right choice and reduce CO2 emissions per parcel as much as possible. From 2023, bol. will be allowed to call itself a B Corp: this certification shows that bol. is on the right path to a more sustainable and socially responsible business.
Reducing the production and use of goods is a challenge for society as a whole, which bol., as one of the largest platforms in the Netherlands and Belgium, also feels responsible to address. That is why bol. helps customers make informed choices when they shop. For example, over 300,000 of bol.'s items have a special label: the globe. Items with a globe possess significant sustainability advantages compared to similar items. They all carry one or more quality marks coordinated with 'Milieu Centraal'. Think of items made of at least 50% recycled materials, items with a Fairtrade label, or appliances that use less energy than their counterparts. bol. has also stopped selling disposable plastic such as plastic cutlery, cups, straws, and cotton buds since the beginning of 2020. The same applies to splash plastic, such as water balloons.
